FAST40+ Class Competes for One Ton Cup Glory
With 13 FAST40+ racing yachts lining up on the startline to compete for the prestigious One Ton Cup, the event promised to deliver lots of close action racing and a fierce battle for one of the most sought after sailing trophies in the world. The event received lots of international media attention with a vast following all around the world and it certainly didn’t disappoint in the entertainment stakes with three days of high octane racing in a fresh northerly breeze comprising of windward leeward races as well as some round-the-cans courses. The racing was close, as usual, with nearly all of the fleet posting at least one top five result. But consistency was the winning formula for Peter Morton’s Carkeek 40+ ‘Girls on Film’ who clinched the solid silver 1898 trophy with five wins out of eight races and the Ker 40+ Invictus who finished in second place.
Ker 40+ on Podium of FAST40+ Class Series
The inaugural FAST40+ season saw a spectacular end to the season with the new class competing as part of the Hamble Winter Series in Round 5. With four wins out of six races the Ker40+ ‘Invictus’ won the weekend’s regatta in impressive style and finished in second place to ‘Girls on Film’ for the overall 2016 FAST40+ Series.
A semi-custom build, the Ker 40+ builds on the success of the Ker 40 but with further optimisation for the FAST 40+ rule. A much lighter hull displacement and deeper draft has reduced drag and the keel fin is optimised both structurally and hydrodynamically. The hull shape also has more volume further forwards and above the normal waterline to allow the yacht to be pushed hard downwind in a big breeze.
FAST40+ Class Set to Grow
The quick growth of this new racing class is certainly turning heads and is attracting new boat owners and crews from all over the world who want to join the fleet next year. The first AGM for the class was held in October and dates have been set for what promises to be another adrenaline fueled series of events in 2017.
