VOLVO VO70 | 2011
Summary
Overview
"HYPR" is a VO70 and the former "Camper", built for the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race.
Designed by Botin Partners and Emirates Team New Zealand, this 3rd generation VO70 design is without question, one of the fastest out there and thanks to her continued love and optimization since the great race, this boat is not one to miss.
As we have seen time and time again, these VO70's not only offer some of the best sailing, particularly offshore, that money can buy, they are also highly proven under both IRC and ORCi rating rules, meaning all Iconic trophies are within reach.
A substantial refit in 2016, as well as nice updates to sails in 2023 and 2025, make this a compelling option if you are looking for a platform that can cope with true ocean racing and real high performance.
Sold as a very complete offering, including containers, she is a boat that needs a closer look.
Build
"HYPR" is the ex-CAMPER Volvo 70 race yacht from 2011, designed by Botin Partners, project BP221, to tackle the Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12 edition.
Her early years saw this design confirmed as one of the best of this VO70 generation, taking 2nd place in the 2011/12 VOR and setting the speed record of 565.84nm in 24 hours.
Mostly notably she also proved reliable in a brutal lap of the planet.
Designer: Botin Partners
Engineering: Emirates Team New Zealand.
Builder: Cookson Boats.
Unlike a lot of these VO70 designs, this one fell into good hands after the VOR concluded and she has built on her early proven pedigree, as a fast ocean racer, capable of both Line Honours and IRC or ORC overall victories, on most races she enters.
General Specs:
LOA: 21.5m
Beam: 5.71m
Air Draft: 32.5m
Water Draft: 5.2m
Displacement: 13.4t
Materials: Full carbon construction, with Nomex cores and Epoxy resins.
Structural design considerations: True ocean racing.
Upgrade History:
"HYPR" (officially named Warrior) had a comprehensive optimization and upgrade refit in 2016, at the Longitud Cero facility in Spain.
Design and engineering upgrades were overseen by Carkeek Design Partners during this time, which allowed the boat to be optimized for the first time, outside of the ultra-tight, VO70 Class rules.
- Keel fin was extended from 4.8m to 5.2m, allowing a bulb weight reduction of 1000kg's.
- The boats internal water ballast system was modified from a single, 1600kg centreline tank, to two 800kg per side aft tanks.
- The yacht was also fully repainted and all deck and internal systems checked.
- Aft escape hatch installed in transom, as well as life raft compartments added.
- Coach roof design was altered.
- All topsides and foils faired and repainted.
- 4th pedestal was added, with addition of overdrive box.
- VOR media desk and structure removed, allowing fresh water system, with on deck tap to be added for no weight gain.
- Yacht was fully NDT tested.
