Debunking the myths holding you back

By ROB SEABOURNE, Ancasta Group Brokerage Manager

ROB SEABOURNE, Ancasta Group Brokerage Manager

For many people, the dream of yacht ownership begins with a quiet thought:

One day. This might be the result of a memorable day at sea, a walk through a marina or the realisation that life is moving too quickly to let it pass you by.

The appeal reaches beyond the yacht itself; it is more about the freedom, adventure and time with friends and family on the water. Yet uncertainty can make ownership feel more daunting than it actually is.

Here, our brokerage expert Rob Seabourne, addresses six common myths that may be preventing you from living your dream of owning a yacht.

Myth #1 You need to know exactly what yacht you want

Few buyers come to us with a precise model or specification in mind. Start with the experience: where do you want to sail, who will join you, and how do you imagine spending your time aboard? A professional yacht broker can then help translate your vision into practical choices around brand, size, layout, age and inventory. You do not need all the answers – curiosity is enough to begin.

Myth #2 You need years of sailing experience to own a yacht

You don’t need a lifetime of experience on the water to become a confident yacht owner. Today’s advanced onboard technology and wide range of skipper and crew training options make ownership far more accessible to newcomers than many people realise. With expert tuition, a detailed handover and, if required, the support of a professional captain, new owners can take the helm and build confidence navigating and berthing from the outset.

Myth #3 Running costs are unpredictable

Yachts require ongoing care, but the costs do not have to be a mystery. Before purchasing, you can budget for berthing, insurance, servicing, and regular maintenance. Surveys and sea trials provide extra reassurance when buying pre-owned vessels, while long warranties and structured handovers support new-yacht buyers. While there may be occasional surprises – similar to owning a house or car – careful planning helps make costs more manageable.

Myth #4 The buying process is stressful

While viewings, price negotiations, surveys, contracts, and sea trials may seem overwhelming, they are actually an exciting part of the journey. A professional yacht broker will coordinate the entire process, explaining each stage as it occurs, and ensuring that the experience of buying a yacht is enjoyable.

Myth #5 You are on your own after the handover

Receiving the keys to your new yacht is just the beginning of your journey as an owner. During the first season, you will learn how your yacht performs, which features you value most and how you prefer to spend your time aboard. At Ancasta, we offer continuous support, including servicing, maintenance, and upgrades, to help make this transition as smooth as possible.

Myth #6 Yachts over 50ft need permanent crew

Modern technology – including joystick controls, thrusters, powered winches, cameras and automated systems – has made many larger yachts easier for owners to handle without professional assistance. With the right yacht, training and occasional support, many vessels over 50ft can be confidently owner-operated.

More than a dream

Seizing the day does not mean rushing into a yacht purchase. It means taking time to explore your long-held ambition. The first step may be a conversation with your local broker, a boat viewing, or time on the water exploring what feels right for you.

From the outside, buying a yacht may seem like an intimidating leap. However, with the best brokerage support and expert advice, making that dream come true may be closer than you think.
