History
Originally built as the 100ft Wally Cento "Hamilton", she then became "Open Season" and now "SOM X".
During her time as "Open Season" she was extended to 107ft overall off the back of a performance study from designer Judel Vrolijk. This has led to a substantial performance increase, whilst hugely increasing aft deck lounging space, along with improved handling and capabilities offshore.

Materials
"Spirit of Malouen X" (SOM) is constructed entirely of carbon fibre and largely using pre-preg fibres with a Nomex honeycomb core, ensuring the stiffest and lightest solution possible.
In addition to her carbon hull, all structural beams and frames are also made in carbon, as are her lightweight interior panels, which are finished with wood veneers where appropriate.
During her construction every care and design decision was focussed around creating something that could deal with extreme loadings, as are the performance requirements for a race yacht, without any material compromise on interior spaces or layout.

Care and Preparation
"SOM X" is importantly a boat and design that has been conceived by sailors, for sailors.
She has been given the highest level of professional care since her original launching and follows a periodic service plan, as these boats typically require.
The boat is typically handled by a crew of 3 for day to day use and can be sailed in cruising mode with only one or two more.
In full regatta mode crew levels will be in the order of 19-22 depending on conditions and events, whilst a few less when in offshore mode, although that could be dramatically reduced with some small sail handling changes.
Currently moored in Marina Del Mar, Palma, she has a permanent berth available.

Spars & Rigging

SOM X is fitted with a custom mast and boom package from Southern Spars, built entirely in Carbon fibre.
4 spreader mast design with EC6 and Carbo-Link standing rigging.
Deep panel carbon V boom with reefing capability
Fixed carbon bowsprit with bobstay.

Sail Plan:
P 43.00
E 13.95
J 12.00
FL 42.87

All sail controls are hydraulically operated with push button handling.
SOM is equipped with a large square top mainsail, with twin running backstay and check stay control for optimizing mast bend and forestay tensions.

Sail Inventory

Equipped with an optimized inventory of sails from both North and Doyle, SOM X is perfectly prepared for either Inshore Mediterranean racing, or longer distance Ocean sailing, thanks to her adaptable and well thought-out configuration.

A large number of new sails in 2023 and the team are adapting an older racing Jib to be setup as a furler, to ensure easy handling with reduced crews and when in cruising mode.

With a sail area of 640 m² upwind and 1,500 m² downwind, this yacht delivers an incredible sailing experience.
She is also equipped with an automated system (hydraulic furlers for J2 & J3, HARKEN winches, etc.), ensuring exceptional handling and manoeuvrability.
